Patriots go for a long-term answer at QB with Mac Jones at No. 15

Football (NFL,High School,College )

It goes without saying that Cam Newton’s performance for the Patriots in 2020 didn’t live up to expectations. Newton threw for 2,657 yards, eight touchdowns, and 10 interceptions over 15 games, and that’s one of the primary reasons that the Patriots finished under .500 for the first time in two decades.

Still, Bill Belichick sees some potential in Newton, and he’s back with the Patriots in 2021 on a one-year deal. Newton is 31 years old, though, and keeping him around short-term certainly won’t prevent them from locking up the Patriots’ quarterback of the future in the 2021 draft.

Which brings us to Pats Pulpit’s pick in our 2021 NFL writers’ mock draft: Alabama quarterback Mac Jones.

There’s no question the Patriots have been actively looking to upgrade the quarterback po...

PSG star Neymar wants to be professional poker player when he retires from football

Football (NFL,High School,College )

PSG star Neymar has expressed his desire to become a professional poker player when he retires from football.

The 29-year-old started playing poker during the 2014 World Cup and has developed a passion for the game since then.

Neymar said he played with Gerard Pique during his time at Barcelona and now counts Keylor Navas and Leandro Paredes among his poker rivals at PSG.

What was said?

When asked by CNEWS if his goal was to be a professional poker player when he retires from football, Neymar said: “It’s true, it’s true. It’s one of the things I love to do the most.

“I feel very comfortable and I think that after playing football I will be able to do tournaments, travel to play tournaments that I have always wanted to participate in and could not do because of my agenda and my caree...

Justin Fields could truly shine in Kyle Shanahan’s 49ers offense if drafted at No. 3

Football (NFL,High School,College )

The San Francisco 49ers have a talented roster from top to bottom, and some can argue — especially GM John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan, considering the move they made to get the third overall pick in the 2021 draft — that the team is a franchise quarterback away from being a perennial contender in the near future.

It’s clear with the move up to the third overall pick that the 49ers organization is looking to move on from current QB Jimmy Garoppolo, as he has had issues remaining healthy and hasn’t been as successful as they had initially hoped. With a good stable of quarterbacks at the top of the draft, the 49ers are primed to pick a very good quarterback prospect who will have the opportunity to excel in Coach Shanahan’s current scheme...

Dorktown: The god-awful drive that changed NFL history

Football (NFL,High School,College )

Now that the new episode of Dorktown has dropped, Jon Bois and Alex Rubenstein to discuss Mark Sanchez, dynasties, and whether or not Jon is stupid.

Thanks to everyone who watched our latest episode of Dorktown! This one was a little different than any other Dorktown episode we’ve ever made: rather than simply telling a story, we made an argument that has proven to be a little controversial: that one disastrous drive in 2011 changed the course of a franchise and, in turn, NFL history.

Below, Alex and I chatted about some odds and ends surrounding the episode. Hope you enjoy. And hey, if you haven’t already, remember to subscribe to Secret Base on YouTube.

Jon: This video stars the Jets in the years before and after 2010, and I gotta say, I found this team really endearing at the ti...

Russell Wilson trade rumors: Patriots, Jets, Washington best realistic fits for disgruntled Seahawks QB

Football (NFL,High School,College )

The Russell Wilson trade rumors are gaining steam just as the Deshaun Watson trade rumors are starting to fade. Now teams looking for an elite veteran starting quarterback can turn their attention more to the Seahawks in trying to acquire the eight-time Pro Bowler and one-time Super Bowl winner.

Moving Wilson no longer is wild speculation. The Athletic has a blockbuster new report on the power struggle in Seattle and how a big rift has developed between the 32-year-old and Seahawks officials, to the point that Wilson’s representatives have brought up the real possibility of a trade.

The Dolphins and Jets, two AFC East teams also tied to Watson because they each hold two first-round picks in the 2021 NFL draft, were mentioned as potential destinations...

Tom Brady once said winning 7 Super Bowls was impossible

We are now a few weeks into the NFL offseason which means that I have begun to binge a lot of television shows (mandatory shout out to Suits which remains awesome).

I’ve also had a bit more time to read and, since I miss football, have been going back through some classics about the game that we all love.

Recently I decided to fire up Gary Myers’ Brady vs Manning, which was released in September of 2016. As you can imagine, it is all about the epic rivalry that existed for a long time between Tom Brady and Peyton Manning.

Matchups between the two GOATs feel like forever ago...

An updated look at the NFL playoffs schedule

Football (NFL,High School,College )

The NFL is down to its final four. The matchups are set in the conference championship games after a thrilling weekend in the Divisional Round that saw the Packers, Bucs, Bills, and Chiefs all advance. By Sunday night, we’ll finally know who will be playing in Super Bowl LV on Feb. 7.

The NFC side is giving us a historic quarterback matchup between perhaps the two greatest talents who have ever played the position. Aaron Rodgers is playing arguably the best football of his life at age-37 and will soon be named the league’s MVP. He picked apart the Rams’ vaunted defense in the Divisional Round, throwing darts all over the field to finish with 296 yards passing, two touchdowns through the air, and another on the ground...

2 winners and 4 losers from the NFL divisional playoff round

Football (NFL,High School,College )

I know this is a difficult morning in Cleveland. Local fans were rooting for the Browns to win, heck everyone outside of Kansas City was praying we’d get a Browns vs. Bills AFC Championship game, but it just wasn’t to be.

I get that it’s disappointing, but dang Cleveland, Browns fans should be over the moon this morning. This was unquestionably the best season the team has had since being re-launched in 1999 — and there’s really something to build off here. We’ve seen scant few winning seasons for the Browns, but this feels like the first where there’s a real foundation that can be built off. A solid future that is actually set up for success, with young talent, the right coaching, and finally a front office that can put everything together.

Not only are all the stars aligni...

Chad Henne’s gutsy plays saved the Chiefs after Patrick Mahomes’ playoffs injury

Football (NFL,High School,College )

The Chiefs are heading back to the AFC Championship, and they did so behind a quarterback not named Patrick Mahomes.

In Sunday’s Divisional Round clash between the Chiefs and Browns, Mahomes was knocked out of the game after suffering a concussion in the third quarter with his team leading 19-10. They finished the drive with a field goal that would be their final points of a thrilling affair at Arrowhead.

Mahomes’ injury paved the way for journeyman Chad Henne to enter the game and log the first playoff snaps of his 11-year career. Though he’s started 54 career games, Henne started just once in the last five years, which came in Week 17 this season when the Chiefs were resting starters in their regular-season finale vs. the Chargers.

It looked like Henne would end up being the dunce...
