Before the puck dropped on the 2021 NHL season, the league had already been impacted by COVID-19.
Aside from the start date being pushed to Jan. 13, a number of players tested positive and four teams had training camps suspended for at least one day or a large number of players miss time. The Stars shut down their camp on Jan. 9 after it was revealed six players and two staff members tested positive. The Penguins canceled training camp the same day, while the Blue Jackets had 19 players miss training camp on Jan. 8. On Jan. 10, the Canucks canceled practice “out of an abundance of caution due to potential exposure to COVID-19.”
The day before the season was set to begin, the NHL announced that 27 players had tested positive during training camp... Read More
The United States has played two games thus far at the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship. They have been two games on opposite ends of the spectrum. Game 1 showcased a team struggling to play a full 60 in a 5-3 loss to Russia. Game 2 was a dominating 73-shot, 11-goal shutout of Austria less than 24 hours later.
On Tuesday the Americans will face a foe that should give them a lot to handle while they aim for a complete 60-minute effort. The Czech Republic is coming off a shocking 2-0 win over Russia backstopped with a 30-save performance by 2019 Kings draft pick Lukas Parik. It was an impressive showing by the Czechs, who blocked more than 20 shots and used a smart, smothering defense to stop Russia’s high-powered offense. In a last-minute change, Parik will get the start... Read More
When the 2019-20 NHL season was paused , the status of free agency was in flux. We now know the signing period will begin at 12 p.m. ET on Oct. 9.
That’s when unrestricted free agents can sign with new teams, restricted free agents with arbitration rights have their next contracts dictated by a third party and general managers play the fun game of “should we or should we not do an offer sheet?” (thanks, Marc Bergevin!).
This season’s list of UFAs is an intriguing one, with the likes of Alex Pietrangelo, Taylor Hall, Torey Krug and Braden Holtby among the top players on the market. Have we seen the last of Zdeno Chara and Joe Thornton? Who is this year’s Sebastian Aho?
Below is a list of each team’s major pending free agents for the upcoming free agency period.

On Tuesday night at 7 p.m. ET, hockey looks towards the future as they conduct the first round of the NHL Entry Draft. The New York Rangers won the first overall pick in the second part of the NHL Draft Lottery. Yes, there were two parts. Yes, it was beautiful chaos. They are expected to select Alexis Lafreniere, 18-year-old left wing from Saint-Eustache, Quebec, Canada.
Let’s get to know Lafreniere a little bit, what makes him special?
He wasn’t just the QMJHL rookie of the year in 2017-18, but the best first-year player in the Canadian Hockey League, and a First-Team All-Star. He claimed the title of CHL Player of Year in his final two years with the Rimouski Oceanic, a feat that had only been achieved once before...

Who will advance in 2020 is anyone’s guess — because, well, anything is obviously possible this year — but one thing is for sure: It’ll be a wild ride.

It started with text messages that led to conversations that turned into a movement.
One day after Milwaukee Bucks players boycotted their NBA playoff game to protest racial inequality, sending a tidal wave of action across the sports world, the NHL’s players opted to not play on Thursday or Friday. The efforts came in response to the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wis., over the weekend
“If you look around this room, there’s a lot of white athletes in here, and I think that’s the statement that’s being made right now,” said the Golden Knights’ Ryan Reaves as he stood in front, and next to, players from the Western Conference bubble. “It’s great that the NBA did this, and MLB and the WNBA — they have a lot of Black players in those leagues... Serena Williams believes the whole year of 2020 should have an asterisk as she sets her sights on a record-equaling grand slam title at the U.S. Open.
Williams is still seeking to move level with Margaret Court by winning her 24th major, though her hopes of doing so were hit by the WTA Tour’s coronavirus-enforced stoppage and the cancellation of Wimbledon, where she has prevailed seven times.
The 38-year-old made her return to action at the Top Seed Open this month, reaching the quarterfinals before losing to Shelby Rogers.
Williams has lost her past four grand slam finals, including last year’s showpiece at Flushing Meadows to Bianca Andreescu.
Andreescu will not defend her title at this year’s event, however; the Canadian is one of six members of the WTA’s top 10 who elected not to ente... Read More
It’s official. Sixteen teams are set to hit the ice between Toronto and Edmonton as the Stanley Cup playoffs begin with first-round action.
But who will skate away with Lord Stanley’s Cup at the end is anyone’s guess because, well, 2020.
The Blackhawks and Canadiens were the 23rd and 24th teams, respectively, in the league standings when the season had to pause due to the pandemic and now they’ll face off against the Golden Knights and Flyers in the first round. Not to mention neither Vegas nor Philadelphia won the Presidents’ Trophy or led their conference way back on March 12, when the regular season paused. Those two teams, the Bruins and Blues, are heading into the playoffs as No. 4 seeds.

The first major tournament of the golf season, the 2020 PGA Championship, produced a fun finish.
At one point in Sunday’s final round, seven golfers were tied for the lead on the back nine at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco. Third-round leader Dustin Johnson was in that group. So was Collin Morikawa.
Then Morikawa took over on the 16th hole.
MORE: How much will Morikawa make for winning?
The Los Angeles native and former Cal-Berkeley player drove the reachable par-4 hole and then drained a short eagle putt to take a two-stroke lead. He eased through the final two holes, with only a slight bit of anxiety as he watched his approach at 18 flirt with missing the green.
After putting out, he just had to wait for the final groups to finish before he could celebrate his first major win and ... Read More
